The Columbus East girls soccer team made Senior Night a memorable one, rallying late to defeat Martinsville 2-1 Thursday evening at the BCSC Soccer Complex. With the Olympians trailing in the final stretch, senior forward Sophie Glick stepped up in a big way. She struck twice in less than two minutes, scoring in the 67th and 68th minutes, to push East in front for good. Both goals came from the top of the box, as she worked her way past defenders and placed precise shots into the back of the net. Earlier in the first half, Martinsville had taken a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, but East’s seniors weren’t about to let their night slip away. The Olympians controlled much of the match, outshooting the Artesians 11-3, and finally broke through when Glick converted the equalizer. Senior Emma Christie helped spark the comeback, first contributing in goal during the opening minutes before moving to the field, where she assisted on the tying score. In the net, Cara Veach took over after Christie’s shift, and East’s defense, anchored by senior center backs Morgan Scott and Cadence Zeser, locked down Martinsville. The Olympians did not allow a single shot on target in the second half. All 11 seniors started the match, giving the program’s upperclassmen a chance to shine in their final regular-season home game. Their collective effort and composure in the closing minutes carried East to a big Senior Night victory. Next up: The O's will host Oldenburg Academy Tuesday, September 30th starting at 6 p.m. at the BCSC Soccer Complex.
