The Columbus East football team delivered a dominant performance Friday night in North Vernon, shutting down Jennings County in a 37-0 Hoosier Hills Conference victory. The defense set the tone, holding the Panthers to just 31 yards of total offense. The Olympians were especially strong against the run, allowing only 11 yards on 38 rushing attempts. Big defensive plays included three sacks and a pair of interceptions, giving East its first shutout since the 2022 season. While the defense controlled the game, the offense wasted no time finding the end zone. Running back JD Rotert accounted for three first-half touchdowns, punching in scores from 1, 6, and 7 yards out. He finished with 67 yards on seven carries. Quarterback Kyson Villarreal added balance through the air, connecting on 5-of-8 passes for 125 yards. His highlight came late in the second quarter when he hit Keaton Lawson for a 36-yard touchdown strike, helping East build a 30-0 halftime lead. Special teams also provided a spark, as Mykel Jones opened the second half with a 50-yard kickoff return, setting up Villarreal’s 5-yard touchdown run. That score closed out the Olympians’ offensive production and triggered a running clock the rest of the way. Lawson paced the receiving corps with three catches for 90 yards, while Kamden Shelley and Jones each contributed with key receptions. East’s ground attack was efficient, with contributions from several backs, including Asher Scott, who tallied 26 yards. With the victory, Columbus East improved to 2-0 in HHC play and 2-2 overall. The Olympians will look to carry their defensive momentum and quick-strike offense into next week’s conference matchup. The Olympians host the New Albany Bulldogs on Friday, September 19th. Kickoff: 7 p.m.
