BLOOMINGTON — The Columbus East boys soccer team fell in heartbreaking fashion Tuesday night, dropping a 2-1 decision at Bloomington North after a disputed late goal decided the match. The Olympians struck first when Ryan Turner found the back of the net off an assist from Farid Garcia Renteria. East carried momentum for much of the contest, but the Cougars battled back to even the score and set up a dramatic finish. With less than a minute remaining, Bloomington North scored what proved to be the game-winner under controversial circumstances. A second ball had rolled onto the field during play, and the assistant referee raised his flag to signal the stoppage. Players from both teams halted — except for one Cougar attacker, who took a shot and scored. Despite the flag, the center referee allowed the goal to stand. Olympians head coach Sam LaVelle expressed frustration with how the final sequence unfolded. “There were two balls on the field and the Assistant Ref signaled to stop play. Everyone stopped except one kid who kicked it in. The referee still counted it,” LaVelle said. The Olympians are back on the pitch Thursday, August 28th when host cross-town rival Columbus North at the BCSC Soccer Complex.
