The Columbus East boys tennis team turned in one of its most competitive outings in recent years Saturday morning at the Greenwood Tri-Match, which also featured the Hauser Jets and host Greenwood Woodmen. The Olympians dropped a 4-1 decision to Greenwood before falling 3-2 in a tightly contested match against Hauser. Despite the setbacks, Head Coach Adam Ulrich noted that the performance marked a step forward compared to past seasons. Freshman Kai Bergman provided a spark at No. 3 singles, sweeping both of his matches with authority. Bergman defeated his Greenwood opponent 6-2, 6-1, before blanking Hauser 6-0, 6-0. At No. 1 singles, senior Trevor Ernst rallied in his second match of the day, battling back for a 6-4, 6-1 victory. Meanwhile, Landon Reddleman at No. 2 singles and the No. 2 doubles duo of Carson Hartsook and Cooper Harry both pushed their matches to tiebreaks against Hauser before coming up just short. Coach Ulrich was encouraged by his team’s effort and resilience. “It’s going to be a good season based on the heart and hustle the boys showed today,” he said. The Olympians return to action this week with a home match vs. Trinity Lutheran on Monday, August 18th at 5 p.m. and on the road Saturday, August 23rd to face the Whiteland Warriors - match start time 9 a.m. Good luck O's!!
