The Columbus East boys soccer team wasted no time setting the tone for their 2025 campaign, delivering a commanding 5-0 performance over Shelbyville in an official IHSAA scrimmage Tuesday night. While the result won’t count in the standings, the win gave the Olympians an early boost of confidence heading into the regular season. East struck first in the opening period when Farid Garcia Renteria calmly converted a penalty kick to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The second period saw Josh VanValkenburg double the advantage, slicing through multiple defenders for a solo goal that energized the squad. In the third period, the Olympians continued to pile on. Robby Orgass finished off a feed from David Sylva to make it 3-0. Moments later, Emilio Quintero Aguirre extended the lead to 4-0 on an assist from Carson Plummer. East capped the scoring when Ronan Maier slotted home a goal off a setup from Quintero Aguirre. With five different goal-scorers and crisp ball movement on display, the Olympians showed plenty of promise in their first competitive action of the year. Columbus East will look to carry the momentum into Saturday’s regular season opener at Whiteland. Kickoff against the Warriors is set for 12:30 p.m.
