In a bittersweet end to a season filled with milestones, the Columbus East boys volleyball team concluded its first-ever campaign on Saturday with a 3-0 loss to 10th-ranked Franklin Community in the semifinal round of the IHSAA Sectional. The Grizzly Cubs, who entered the postseason as the clear favorites with a 22-12 regular season record, showed their experience and firepower in sets that finished 25-13, 25-15, and 25-11. But the story of Columbus East’s season is far more than a final score. This spring marked the birth of the Olympian boys volleyball program, and in just a few short months, the team laid a foundation that will support generations of players to come. From their first win on their home court on April 8, to an unforgettable come-from-behind five-set thriller over cross-town rival Columbus North, the Olympians delivered memories, momentum, and something even more powerful: belief. They closed out the regular season on a tear, winning six of their last seven matches and showcasing growth, chemistry, and an evident passion for the game. Their energy was infectious, and it was clear to all who watched that this group wasn't just playing volleyball—they were building a team, a culture, and a tradition. The coaching staff, led by Kailey Smith, played a crucial role in guiding the program through all the unpredictable challenges that come with launching something brand new. With patience, leadership, and a steady hand, Smith helped the team find its identity and develop a strong sense of unity and purpose. The team will say goodbye to several seniors who helped shape the early identity of this emerging program, but they leave behind a strong example for the next generation of Olympians. With returning players gaining valuable experience and hoping to find new talent to join the roster for next year, the Olympians look build a successful inaugural season. While the final match may not have gone their way, Columbus East boys volleyball exits its first season with pride, promise, and plenty to be proud of. The first chapter is written—and what a beginning it was.
