The Columbus East softball team hosted the Avon Orioles in a late-season non-conference matchup Thursday night at The Torch Yard, but struggled from the outset and ultimately fell 14-3 in five innings. Avon jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back, scoring in each frame. Columbus East answered with a solo home run from Baleigh Fish in the bottom of the first, and later added two more runs in the second on an RBI double by Lola Watkins. Watkins led the Olympians offensively, finishing with two doubles and two RBIs. Lilly Tindell added a single, and Fish reached base three times with a home run and two walks. Jacque Boroughs also drew two walks at the plate. Despite a few bright spots, the Olympians couldn’t keep pace with Avon’s offense and were held scoreless in the final three innings. The Orioles sealed the win with a five-run fifth inning, ending the game via the 10-run rule. Columbus East continues its final stretch of the regular season looking to bounce back in a HHC matchup when they head to Jeffersonville to battle the Red Devils on Monday, May 19th. First pitch: 6 p.m.
