As the Columbus East Olympians wrap up their boys' basketball season, Head Coach Perry Nash reflects on the team’s journey—its triumphs, challenges, and the foundation being laid for the future. In an exclusive interview, Coach Nash shares insights into the team’s progress, the importance of resilience, and the goals driving next season. Defining Moments of the Season- When asked about the key moments that shaped the season, Nash pointed to the team’s sectional victory over North as a standout. “The team showed how much we had progressed from the first time we played them,” he said. The win was a testament to the players’ development and ability to rise to the occasion. Overcoming Adversity- Injuries and illnesses are inevitable in any season and this season presented many, but Nash emphasized the “next man up” mentality instilled in his players. “We talk all the time about competing,” he said. “The environment we create in practice allows us to be ready because you’re one ankle sprain away from playing major minutes.” The season served as a lesson in preparation and perseverance. Building for the Future- With the departure of key seniors, the team faces the challenge of integrating new talent while relying on returning players, including the top two scorers. “We will miss what the seniors brought to our team,” Nash admitted. “The offseason will be a time to see who rises to fill those roles.” The Olympians’ emphasis on depth and player development will be crucial in the transition. Team Chemistry and Off-Court Bonding- A strong sense of camaraderie played a significant role in the team’s performance. “This group was very close on and off the court,” Nash noted. Throughout the season, the team participated in activities like bowling, an escape room challenge, and community service at local elementary schools. That bond was evident in postseason award voting, where seven of the top 12 players received votes for “Best Teammate.” Strategic Adjustments for Next Season- On the defensive end, Nash is looking to turn up the intensity. “We want to get up into you and put ball pressure on the offense,” he explained. “We took a big step this year, and the next step is being able to do that full court. We’ll see how high we can pick up this summer.” The team’s defensive evolution will be a focal point in the offseason. Chasing Greater Goals- Reflecting on the team’s achievements, Nash takes pride in their winning record—a significant milestone. However, his vision extends further. “One goal this season was to start to win, and we did that,” he said. “The next goal is to win a sectional championship. We got close this year, but that has to be our focus next year.” With a culture of competitiveness, a commitment to growth, and a clear vision for the future, the Columbus East boys’ basketball program is on a steady climb. The foundation is set, and the Olympians are ready to take the next step.
