In their home opener on Wednesday night, the Columbus East girls basketball team started strong but couldn’t hold off a second-half surge from East Central, falling 50-39 at the Orange Pit. The Olympians entered halftime with a 26-19 advantage, showcasing sharp shooting and solid teamwork. However, the game shifted dramatically in the third quarter, as East Central outscored East 20-2, turning a seven-point deficit into a lead. Despite trailing 39-28 entering the fourth quarter, the Olympians battled back with an 8-1 run that cut the deficit to 40-36. Junior guard Kenzie Cheek spearheaded the effort, scoring seven of her team-high 16 points during the stretch.
