As Columbus East Olympian wrestling gears up for the 2024-2025 season, we caught up with Head Coach Chris Cooper for a look at his vision for the team, the standout wrestlers, and what’s ahead for one of the area’s top programs. The Olympians’ season kicks off in the Fire Pit on December 5th against the Seymour Owls, promising an exciting start for East fans. Expectations and Goals: Coach Cooper’s focus is clear: “We aim to build a championship-level culture that thrives both on and off the mat,” he says. Emphasizing daily improvement, Cooper encourages his team to excel academically, serve as role models in the community, and develop bonds with youth program wrestlers. Key Wrestlers to Watch: The team returns 12 of last season’s 14 varsity wrestlers, including eight Semi-State competitors. Junior Talon Jessup, a returning state placer, has moved up two weight classes and is gunning for a state championship. Other strong contenders include Ethan Poling, Gage Rutan, and Caleb Cooper, each bringing unique strengths and high expectations. Underclassmen like Lincoln Cooper and Clayton Miller are also expected to make an impact, and senior Colin McMahon, who nearly qualified for the state meet last year, will be one to watch at 190 lbs. Many of these young wrestlers have set their sights on an individual state title, a shared goal that they talk about often as they work toward making it a reality. Preparation and Conditioning: Olympian wrestlers are committing to a rigorous regimen of conditioning, strength training, and wrestling skill work. Many team members also train with the Indiana Outlaws wrestling club, enhancing their skills year-round. Strong Weight Classes and Dual Match Power: East boasts a solid lineup from top to bottom. Coach Cooper is especially excited about the dual meet lineup, where he sees no weak spots. With a balanced roster, East is ready to take on all challengers. Can’t-Miss Competitions: Coach Cooper and the team are especially excited about the lineup of competitions this season. The State Duals Tournament and the 32-team Al Smith Invitational are highlights, offering the Olympians prime opportunities to test their skills against Indiana’s best programs at midseason. But fans won’t have to go far to catch great action —Columbus East is thrilled to host four home duals in the Orange Pit. Mark your calendars for 12/5 against Seymour, 12/12 versus Franklin, 12/18 against North, and 1/8 versus Cathedral. With an upgraded Columbus East Invitational (December 18th) featuring 16 teams, the season is packed with high-energy events right here in the heart of East’s wrestling community. Building a Strong Team Culture: Developing a strong team culture in an individual sport like wrestling is a priority. Coach Cooper’s culture pillars - Be Accountable, Help and Hold Teammates Accountable, and Earn Your 1% Every Day. These important pillars are displayed in the wrestling room and serve as the foundation for team conduct. This year’s captains, Talon Jessup and Caleb Cooper will help lead the team, embodying these values daily. Eyes on the Prize: Statewide Goals- Ultimately, Coach Cooper’s goals are straightforward: “We want to be the best team in the state.” He emphasizes a gritty, fighting mentality in every match. It’s about approaching each competition as an opportunity, respecting the effort needed in each meet, and—well, simply giving it their all. Ready to Wrestle: The Season Begins: With the season opener on December 5th, Coach Cooper and the Columbus East Olympians are eager to hit the mat and make their hard work count. This team isn’t just about wins and losses—it’s about building a lasting legacy of determination, integrity, and pride, one practice and one match at a time. “We’re not just wrestling for ourselves,” says Coach Cooper, “we’re wrestling for each other, our school, and everyone who supports Columbus East. We’re here to represent something bigger.” As the Olympians take on a new season, they’re bringing their all—dedicated to honoring their team’s history and blazing a path for future champions. Grab your seat at the Fire Pit on December 5th to support them as they kick off what’s set to be an unforgettable year!!
