The Columbus East Olympians kicked off Week One of the IHSAA football regular season by hosting the Bloomington South Panthers on Friday night at Stafford Field. In the first half, the Olympians' defense managed to hold the Panthers to just 13 points. Columbus East responded with a touchdown in the second quarter, though the missed extra point left them trailing 13-6 at halftime. A late second-quarter interception gave the Olympians a chance to close the gap, getting the ball down to South's 38-yard line. However, the momentum was halted by an intentional grounding penalty, stalling the drive. Bloomington South extended their lead on their opening drive of the second half, making it 20-6. The Olympians fought back, driving the ball down to South's 2-yard line. However, they were stopped on three consecutive runs, and a critical fourth-down pass attempt from Villareal fell incomplete, turning the ball over on downs. Taking over deep in their own territory, Bloomington South then drove 95 yards to score another touchdown, pushing the lead to 27-6. This effectively sealed the game, as the Panthers secured the 27-6 victory. Columbus East Stats: - K. Villareal: 16 completions on 27 attempts, 155 yards passing, 34 yards rushing - K.
