Lady O’s Pick Up First HHC Win Over the Highlanders: Girls’ basketball was in action Tuesday evening when Columbus East was host to Floyd Central in the Orange Pit. It came down to the final seconds where the Lady O’s came away victorious 43-38 thanks to their outstanding efforts on defense and their second chance opportunities. Starting in the first quarter the Highlanders would find themselves with an early 2-0 lead, but the Olympians responded by going on a 9 to zero run. Messiah Trapp would score the first points for East, tying the game 2-2. Caroline Frost would score the next three points, and Madelyn Poe would score the next four points to make the score 9-2. Floyd Central wouldn’t end the quarter without a fight as Elise Coleman would bank a three at the buzzer making it 9-5. The second quarter was much of the same with the Olympians keeping the pressure on the defense end. The 2-3 zone worked causing the Highlanders to have serval turnovers which led to points for East. Poe would start the second quarter with a three, causing Floyd Central to take a 30-second timeout. Frost would extend the lead with her great hustle on the glass making the score 14-5. After Trapp scored the next three points, Floyd Central took another timeout with 3:01 before halftime. After the break, it led to Trapp grabbing an offensive rebound and drawing the foul. She drained both free throws, giving her seven points in the second quarter. Once again Coleman would hit a three-pointer to close out the first half. The second half brought back-and-forth scoring by both teams. Frost would start the third quarter with a two-point shot after rolling off a screen. The Highlanders' first possession resulted in a three-point basket from Nora Gibson causing the Olympians to take their first timeout. After the timeout, Trapp got the fans on their feet after a great spin move in the post, and next possession Jenna Guse scored making the score 25-14. The Lady O’s would end the third quarter leading 28-19. Going into the fourth quarter Samara Miller from Floyd Central would swish a three making the score 28-22. Frost would score, and next possession Victoria Cuhabar would extend the Lady O’s to a double digit lead, 32-22. After two made baskets from the Highlanders Cuhabar would hit a three-pointer to end the run of Floyd Central. Miller would hit a three-pointer for Floyd Central cutting into the lead 35-31, which caused East to take a timeout with 3:16 remaining. A great play by Coach Kaitlyn Phillips would set up Poe to answer back with a three of her own which had the Orange Pit cheering. The Highlanders would get a few stops making the score 40-38, but Poe would hit two clutch free throws with 20.4 seconds left. The final score would be in favor of the Olympians winning 43-38 giving East their first win in conference play. The Lady O’s held Floyd Central under their season average of 44.7 points per game, thanks to their hustle, toughness, defense, and rebounding. Scoring for East was Trapp, leading the Lady O’s with 13 points. Poe added 12 points, Frost had 10, Cuhadar with 6, and Guse with two. The Lady O’s will be back in action on December 9th to take on Jeffersonville, and then the crosstown rivalry on December 14th at Columbus North High School.
