The Orange Pit - Saturday evening brought a relentless, see-saw battle to the Orange Pit as the Columbus East Olympians tipped off their home opener against the visiting Whiteland Warriors. Despite establishing a massive presence on the boards, the Olympians ultimately succumbed to a late offensive wave, dropping a hard-fought 55-50 decision. The contest was a true tug-of-war that featured 11 separate lead changes alongside seven ties. Columbus East (0-2) controlled the glass with absolute authority, finishing the night with a staggering 44-17 rebounding advantage over Whiteland (2-0). However, maintaining possession proved to be a persistent hurdle for the hosts, as 35 turnovers severely disrupted their offensive rhythm throughout the matchup. Inside the paint, Hayden Meek anchored the Olympians' attack, putting up a team-high 16 points while grabbing seven rebounds. The front court dominance was further bolstered by Lola Watkins, who flirted with a double-double by recording nine points and 10 boards. Balanced contributions poured in across the roster, with Krea Martin adding eight points, while Bella Kintner and London Cline chipped in seven and six points, respectively, to go along with seven rebounds apiece. Conversely, Whiteland relied heavily on an explosive perimeter game, driven primarily by freshman Abby Boner, who scorched the nets for a game-high 24 points fueled by six 3-pointers. The dramatic crescendo arrived midway through the final frame. The scoreboard was deadlocked at 44-44 with just 4:25 remaining when the Olympians suffered a critical blow; Meek picked up her fifth foul and was forced to the bench for the remainder of the evening. Despite losing their leading scorer, East showed resilience and briefly reclaimed the advantage when Cline sank a pair of high-pressure free throws. Ultimately, the final 90 seconds belonged entirely to the visitors. Launching a decisive 11-5 scoring surge over the last 1:40, the Warriors flipped the momentum and seized total control. An aggressive putback by Isa Mendez, followed swiftly by a devastating steal and transition layup from Alexa Lee with 1:23 left on the clock, delivered the final dagger that permanently tilted the scales in Whiteland's favor. The Olympians have two games this coming week: At Roncalli HS Tue, Nov. 10 and back in the Orange Pit against Southport HS on Fri, Nov. 13.
