BLOOMINGTON — Every championship journey is measured not just by the final outcome on the scoreboard, but by the growth, character, and resolve discovered along the path. On Saturday afternoon at Bloomington North High School, the Columbus East Olympian volleyball team stepped onto the court for the IHSAA Regional Championship match against a powerhouse Bloomington South squad. Facing an imposing Panthers team that carried a 28-2 record, the Olympians encountered tough sledding against their opponent’s size and consistency, ultimately falling in straight sets: 25-11, 25-14, and 25-17. While the defeat brought East’s season to a close, the final match told only a small part of a much larger, inspiring story of perseverance. Watching this Columbus East team develop over the course of the autumn was a genuine pleasure. Week by week, the Olympians sharpened their mechanics, solidified their on-court chemistry, and learned how to navigate high-pressure moments together. That gradual climb reached an exhilarating peak during the postseason, where East put everything together in spectacular fashion. By knocking off both East Central and Franklin in sectional play, the Olympians captured an IHSAA Sectional Championship banner—a hard-earned milestone that rewarded their dedication and proved what they could accomplish when clicking on all cylinders. That resilient spirit was fully visible during Saturday’s regional battle. Rather than folding after a difficult opening set against Bloomington South's formidable front line, the Olympians elevated their play with each passing frame. East showed marked improvement in set two and delivered its fiercest push in the third. Trailing 20-11, the Olympians mounted an energetic charge with defensive specialist Kadence Miller at the service line, stringing together points to slice the deficit down to 20-16 before the Panthers finally closed out the contest. East’s all-around effort was anchored by balanced contributions across the floor: Outside hitter Addy Dean led the offensive charge by pounding nine kills while maintaining back-row stability with six digs. Middle hitter Emma Armstrong provided a strong two-way presence at the net, turning in five kills and a team-high three blocks. Setter Kenlee Gault distributed 11 assists to orchestrate the attack, complemented by Jillian Chapple's eight assists. Kadence Miller patrolled the back row with tenacity, scooping up 11 digs to lead the defensive effort. Ava Tartt produced four kills and seven digs, while Bailey Rohde added two rejections at the net to round out the defensive resistance. The afternoon also marked the conclusion of a high school career for the Olympians' lone senior, Cadence Smith. Serving as the sole upperclassman in a locker room filled with underclassmen, Smith was the heartbeat of the roster. Her steady leadership, selfless work ethic, and consistently positive attitude provided an indispensable guiding light through every peak and valley of the campaign. Smith embraced the responsibility of mentoring her younger teammates, setting an exemplary standard of sportsmanship and team. The entire Olympian community extends its gratitude to Cadence for her dedication to the program and wishes her nothing but the absolute best in all of her future endeavors. With Smith being the only departing player, Columbus East enters the offseason with a remarkably bright horizon. The postseason run demonstrated that this young group already possesses the skill and composure needed to win championship trophies. Another dedicated offseason—spent sharpening fundamentals in club volleyball and gaining functional power through structured strength and conditioning—will pay massive dividends when the team reconvenes next fall. The foundation has been firmly poured, the postseason appetite has been whetted, and the future of Columbus East volleyball is in outstanding hands. Thank you Olympians - Orange Nation is proud of you!
