A Bizarre Ending and Penalty Storm A wild flurry of yellow flags, multiple ejections, and an unresolved final minute turned Friday night’s postseason opener at Stafford Field at Bob Gaddis Stadium into pure chaos. The IHSAA Class 4A sectional first-round contest between Columbus East and the visiting Charlestown Pirates came to an abrupt halt with 59 seconds still remaining on the game clock. Late in the fourth quarter, an apparent one-yard touchdown run by East's Daelyn Diaz was wiped out by a holding penalty. Immediately following the whistle, a Charlestown player struck an Olympian in the groin, drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Once officials marked off the yardage, the game came to an unexpected standstill. Coaches or AD couldn't confirm whether the game officials officially called the contest early or if Charlestown chose to leave the field. The Pirates were whistled 21 times on the night, including 10 unsportsmanlike conduct fouls that resulted in the ejection of three players and their head coach. Through the turbulence, the Olympians kept their discipline to secure a 56-36 victory—marking the program's first postseason win since 2020 and its first home playoff victory since 2018. Fourth Quarter: Sealing the Result Before the confusing final minute, the Olympians effectively put the game on ice during the fourth quarter. Charlestown cut into the margin early in the period when Christian Grayson connected with Addison Jones on a 13-yard touchdown pass to make it 49-28. East answered with a steady, clock-draining drive. Quarterback Kam Combest capped it off by muscling across the goal line on a one-yard touchdown run with 5:07 remaining, extending the lead to 56-28. The Pirates added a one-yard touchdown run by Brayden Traub and a two-point conversion pass at the 3:26 mark, but East's high-powered attack had already built an insurmountable cushion. Third Quarter: 28-Point Eruption Breaks It Open Holding a 21-14 lead at the break, Columbus East completely took over the game with a 28-point third quarter. Opening Drive: Combest punched the ball into the end zone from a yard out at the 10:09 mark to widen the lead. Defensive Stop: East’s defense recovered a Pirate fumble on the next possession. Aided by two consecutive unsportsmanlike penalties against Charlestown, Carson Gallion scored on a 13-yard end-around run to push the advantage to 35-14 with 8:36 remaining. Special Teams Spark: After an East turnover allowed Charlestown to briefly cut the deficit on a 39-yard run by Traub, Gallion immediately seized momentum back. He took the ensuing kickoff 88 yards to the house, putting East ahead 42-21 with 3:59 left in the frame. The Clincher: Running back Owen Hatfield capped the third-quarter barrage with a 16-yard touchdown dash with 35 seconds left, making it 49-21. First Half: Back-and-Forth Battle The second-half fireworks contrasted with a tightly contested opening 24 minutes. Charlestown struck first on a 62-yard touchdown pass from Grayson to Robert Barker midway through the first quarter. East responded less than two minutes later when Hatfield broke free on a 47-yard scoring scamper. The Olympians then grabbed a 13-7 lead late in the first quarter on a two-yard touchdown connection from Combest to Paxton Thompson. Grayson briefly put Charlestown back in front, 14-13, on an 11-yard run midway through the second quarter. However, East took the lead for good with 5:50 left before halftime when Combest launched a 36-yard touchdown strike to Gallion, followed by a successful two-point conversion pass to Jackson Miller that sent the Olympians into the locker room ahead 21-14. Game Breakdown & Statistical Leaders The Olympians dominated on the ground and stayed sharp through the air to compile one of their most balanced offensive showings of the season: Rushing Attack: Owen Hatfield led all rushers with a career-best 215 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Daelyn Diaz ground out 44 yards on 11 attempts, Gallion added a 13-yard touchdown run, Combest punched in two touchdowns while tallying seven yards on two carries, and Gavin Wilcox recorded two yards on one attempt. Passing Game: Combest completed 7 of 10 passes for 164 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Trick plays added to the total, with Hatfield completing a five-yard pass and Wilcox attempting one throw. Receiving Corps: Miller hauled in two catches for 53 yards and a two-point conversion. Connor Fudge recorded a 53-yard reception, Gallion contributed three catches for 48 yards and a score, and Thompson caught two passes for 15 yards and a touchdown.
