NASHVILLE, Ind. — Behind a low-stick front-running effort from junior Norman Dickson and a determined pack push down the stretch, the Columbus East boys cross-country team punched its ticket to the postseason’s next stage on Saturday, securing fifth place at the IHSAA Sectional #21 hosted by Brown County High School. The Olympians posted a team score of 151 points across the rolling 5,000-meter course, fending off sixth-place Greensburg (158) by a tight seven-point margin to grab the fifth and final team qualifying spot. With the top-five finish, the East boys advance as a complete squad to next Saturday’s IHSAA Regional championship at Crawford County. Dickson spearheaded the boys' charge with an aggressive race near the front of the 87-runner field, crossing the line in sixth place overall with a time of 16:07.00. Freshman Daxton Wolf delivered a crucial 28th-place performance in 17:44.00, giving the Olympians key separation in the middle stages. The battle for the final regional berth came down to East's third, fourth, and fifth scorers. Senior Cullen Fullerton (18:06.00, 36th) and freshman Henry Meredith (18:10.00, 37th) finished back-to-back, while junior Liam Wiltsey slammed the door on Greensburg’s chase by clocking 18:25.00 for 44th place. Junior Mick Emme (19:01.00, 57th) and sophomore Caleb Reid (19:11.00, 61st) rounded out the varsity seven as pushers. Cross-town rival Columbus North captured the boys team title with a dominant 18 points, placing five runners in the top seven. Host Brown County (110) took runner-up honors, followed by Edgewood (141) and Jennings County (142). GIRLS DISPLAY TIGHT 48-SECOND PACK IN SEASON FINALE In the girls race, Columbus East mounted a cohesive team showing, relying on disciplined pack running to finish seventh overall with 176 points. While the Olympians fell just short of the top-five team cutoff required to move on to regionals, they produced one of the tightest scoring spreads in the entire sectional field. Junior Abigail Morales led the East lineup across the line, securing 29th place in 22:10.00. From there, the Olympians moved through the chute in close succession. A senior trio of Trinity Burns (22:26.00, 32nd), Elizabeth Sztaba (22:38.00, 36th), and Abby Collins (22:41.00, 37th) formed an effective scoring wall, while freshman London Kareus capped the scoring in 42nd place with a time of 22:58.00. The gap between East’s first and fifth scoring runners was just 48 seconds. Freshman Lily Pendleton (23:04.00, 44th) and sophomore Brooke Newell (23:35.00, 50th) provided depth for the squad. Columbus North achieved a sweep of the team titles, taking the girls championship with a score of 15 by sweeping the first five individual spots. Greensburg (77), Edgewood (80), Seymour (95), and Brown County (144) earned the remaining four team berths to Crawford County.
