Bedford, IN - Standing along the sideline with Bedford North Lawrence threatening on the doorstep of the red zone and roughly sixty seconds left on the clock, Columbus East sophomore defensive back Jayden DeHart made the defining play of the evening. Leaping into the mist, DeHart pulled down a game-saving interception to extinguish the Stars' comeback bid and protect a 31-27 victory. The takeaway capped an exhaustive, three-and-a-half-hour marathon burdened by 27 accepted penalties totaling 247 yards. The win lifted East to a 5-4 regular-season record (4-1 in the Hoosier Hills Conference), locking up second place in the league behind Floyd Central, who secured the conference crown with a 50-7 rout of New Albany. The elements on Friday night transformed the contest into an immediate battle against conditions. After south-central Indiana enjoyed a late warm stretch with Thursday temperatures hovering near 70 degrees, a sharp autumn front blew through the region ahead of kickoff. Temperatures fell swiftly to 51 degrees, accompanied by a biting north wind, steady rain, and a relentless spitting mist. Packed into the grandstands, the Olympian crowd bundled up in heavy coats, hats, and rain gear to watch their team navigate the season's first true taste of Fall football. That chill set the stage for a tense fourth quarter. BNL closed the gap on the very first snap of the final frame when running back Malakai Goodman found a seam up the middle and sprinted 55 yards for a touchdown. The Stars failed on the conversion try, leaving East with a precarious 31-27 advantage. While the Olympians were forced to punt on their next possession, their defense stood tall in the closing minutes, forcing a BNL punt and later teeing up DeHart’s climactic interception. The narrow fourth-quarter margin was the result of a furious second-half surge by BNL, which scored 21 unanswered points to erase an early 24-0 Olympian lead. The Stars closed the gap in the third quarter when Goodman scored from 2 yards out out of the Wildcat formation, followed by Camden Gates running in a two-point conversion off a broken snap. Moments later, Stars quarterback Cutler Chastain broke into the end zone on a 6-yard keeper to narrow East’s lead to 24-21. Facing total loss of momentum, East found its counterpunch late in the third quarter. Running back Owen Hatfield took a handoff, broke free along the edge behind a downfield block from wide receiver Jackson Miller, and galloped 79 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. Hatfield carried the workload on the ground for East, finishing the night with 169 rushing yards on 24 carries. The second-half turbulence stood in sharp contrast to East's opening blitz. Before kickoff, BNL celebrated Senior Night with a helicopter landing on the field to deliver the game ball in memory of Kingston Lanham, a beloved classmate who passed away from cancer. However, the Olympians seized control 22 seconds into the game. On the opening play from scrimmage, quarterback Kameron Combest executed a play-action fake and fired a deep 75-yard touchdown strike to Carson Gallion. East kept the pressure on during BNL's subsequent possessions. Linebacker Clayton Miller disrupted a drive by jarring the ball loose from Chastain, setting up an Olympian fumble recovery in Stars territory. Combest quickly capitalized by connecting with Jackson Miller for a 15-yard touchdown pass. Before the opening quarter wrapped up, Combest struck Gallion again on a 33-yard touchdown pass to mount a 21-0 lead. Jackson Miller extended the cushion to 24-0 midway through the second quarter with a 34-yard field goal that cleared the crossbar. BNL broke through just before the break when Chastain lobbed a 30-yard touchdown pass into the end zone to Jackson Jones with 59 seconds remaining in the half. Combest delivered an efficient passing performance in difficult conditions, finishing 11 of 22 for 266 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. Gallion caught three passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns, while Jackson Miller recorded four receptions for 77 yards alongside his field goal and crucial perimeter blocking. On the other side of the ball, the Olympian defense constantly pressured Chastain, bringing down the Stars quarterback for four sacks over the course of the night. With the regular-season slate complete, the Olympians now turn their attention to postseason action. Columbus East will host the Class 4A Sectional opener on Friday, October 23rd, welcoming the 7-1 Charlestown Pirates to Stafford Field at Bob Gaddis Stadium. Charlestown will travel north following a 42-7 victory over Jennings County to close its regular season. The Pirates' lone setback came in late August against 2A #1 Brownstown Central (42-7). Aside from that loss, Charlestown has built an impressive resume with wins over Silver Creek (35-16), Madison (42-28), North Harrison (42-6), Scottsburg (62-21), Corydon Central (38-0), and Salem (10-7). After holding off a relentless rival through penalties and freezing rain, the Olympians head into tournament play carrying significant momentum onto their home turf.
