ST. LEON, Ind. — When the Columbus East and East Central boys soccer teams met back in mid-August, they fought to a tough defensive 1-1 draw. Fast forward to Thursday night's IHSAA Sectional semifinal rematch in St. Leon, and history initially looked ready to repeat itself. A scoreless, tightly contested first half pointed toward another defensive grind. But coming out of the intermission, the Olympians found their offensive groove and blew the game wide open. Columbus East erupted for three unanswered second-half goals, powering past the host Trojans for a decisive 3-0 victory and securing a spot in the sectional title match. The Olympian breakthrough began when Drew Dobbs got Columbus East on the board, scoring off a well-placed free kick from Adam Arnholt . Once the ice was broken, the momentum shifted entirely in favor of the visitors. Devrenson Zephrin doubled the lead, finding the back of the net off an assist from Ethan Glick . Seeking to put the match entirely out of reach, Iberi Gonzalez capitalized on yet another Glick assist—marking Glick's second helper of the half—to cap off the 3-0 scoring surge. While the attack provided the fireworks, the defense was equally instrumental in securing the victory. Goalkeeper Ryder Meek delivered a stellar performance between the posts, stopping all 11 shots he faced to earn the shutout, even as East Central held a 15-12 edge in overall shots . The triumph boosts the Olympians’ record to 8-4-5 on the year. Up Next: Sectional Championship Rivalry Match The win sets up an all-Columbus clash for the sectional crown. Saturday's final features a rematch of a late-August thriller between the two local programs. In that previous meeting, the Olympians fell behind 2-0 for much of the night before staging a heroic late-game comeback to pull out a 2-2 tie. With a championship on the line, the stage is set for another high-stakes battle. To support the team on the road, 50 free student tickets are available for Saturday's match.
