Floyds Knobs, IN - With under eight minutes left in the fourth quarter on Friday night, the Columbus East Olympians mounted one final push to rescue their conference championship hopes. Capping off an 80-yard drive—their longest march of the evening—quarterback Kam Combest connected with Jayden Wilcox for an 8-yard touchdown pass. Following the extra point from Jackson Miller, the Olympians pulled within two scores. However, fifth-ranked Floyd Central quickly answered with a final touchdown run to secure a 41-21 victory and take control of the Hoosier Hills Conference crown. That fourth-quarter score was a brief highlight following a brutal third quarter that turned a tight battle upside down. After going toe-to-toe through the opening two quarters, Columbus East saw its momentum stall out of halftime. Floyd Central took advantage, scoring 21 unanswered points in the third frame to transform a deadlocked game into a 35-14 deficit for the Olympians entering the final quarter. The second-half slide stood in stark contrast to a dominant opening half for Columbus East. Defensive linebacker Greg Craft provided an early spark by intercepting a pass and returning it deep into Highlander territory. That takeaway directly set up a 1-yard touchdown toss from Combest to Paxton Thompson. Combest guided the Columbus East passing attack all night, completing 27 of 43 passes for 179 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He spread the ball across the field, finding Thompson eight times for 46 yards and Miller seven times for a team-high 61 receiving yards. On the ground, Owen Hatfield shouldered the bulk of the running game for the Olympians, carrying the ball 17 times for 64 yards. Hatfield delivered the team's biggest play of the first half, punching in a 6-yard touchdown run as time expired in the second quarter to lock the game in a 14-14 halftime stalemate. Rushing assistance came from Daelyn Diaz with four carries for 27 yards, Asher Scott with six carries for 12 yards, and Dallas Dykstra with three carries for 7 yards. Combest utilized a deep rotation of targets to keep drives moving. Carson Gallion caught four passes for 22 yards, while Hatfield added three receptions for 25 yards out of the backfield. Wilcox caught two passes for 17 yards and a touchdown, Connor Fudge added two catches for 6 yards, and Diaz hauled in one catch for 2 yards. Despite a resilient first half and key production across the roster, Columbus East could not overcome Floyd Central's third-quarter surge, falling short in their bid for the top spot in the conference standings.
