COLUMBUS — A heartbreaking goal in the closing minutes proved to be the difference Tuesday night as the Columbus East boys soccer team dropped a 1-0 home contest against the Floyd Central Highlanders. The high-stakes Hoosier Hills Conference clash carried major conference title implications for the Olympians, but the late setback handed them their first league loss of the season and effectively ended their hopes of capturing the HHC title. The opening half played out as a tightly contested battle, with both sides trading possession and keeping danger at bay. As the second half progressed, however, Floyd Central began controlling the tempo and creating higher-quality offensive chances. The match appeared destined for a scoreless draw until the 78th minute. With a little over two minutes remaining in regulation, Floyd Central’s broke the deadlock by powering a header into the net, delivering the game-winner for the visitors. Floyd Central held the statistical advantage for the night, outshooting Columbus East 15-8 overall and placing eight shots on target compared to three for the Olympians. Goalkeeper Ryder Meek kept East within striking distance throughout the match, recording seven saves under steady pressure. The Olympians will look to bounce back and reset as they enter the final stretch of the regular season. Columbus East returns to action on Saturday, September 26th, when they host the New Albany Bulldogs at 11:30 a.m.
