Extreme late-summer heat across Indiana delayed Thursday evening’s kickoff at the BCSC Soccer Complex, forcing Columbus East and conference rival Seymour to wait out sweltering conditions. Even with the readjusted 8 p.m. start time, the heat was still lingering. While the eventual 1-1 final score allowed the Olympians to retain the "O" Cup for another season, the performance highlighted several area that still require refinement as conference play begins. Columbus East generated early momentum, capitalizing just two minutes into the match. Ethan Glick cleaned up a rebound off an Adam Arnholt free kick to give the Olympians a quick 1-0 lead. However, that early spark faded as ball distribution stalled and defensive gaps appeared. Seymour equalized midway through the first half, taking advantage of unforced turnovers. Throughout the evening, East struggled to maintain consistent possession or string together clean passes, allowing the opposition to dictating the tempo for extended stretches. Defensive execution kept the Olympians in the match. Goalkeeper Ryder Meek delivered a busy performance, making nine saves to offset a 10-8 shot deficit and prevent a complete collapse. Late in the contest, East generated a few isolated scoring opportunities, but execution in front of the net fell short. A 72nd-minute strike from Miguel Ferrer drifted wide, and a point-blank attempt by Blake Plummer in the 78th minute was saved, sealing the deadlock. The Olympians hold a 0-0-1 mark in the Hoosier Hills Conference. Columbus East still remain in position to compete for a third straight league championship.
