The Columbus East football team demonstrated high-level execution and frontline strength in Friday night’s rivalry showdown against Columbus North, heading into halftime deadlocked at 14-14 before second-half miscues yielded a 42-14 final score. While the defeat marks the Olympians' second consecutive loss of the season and Columbus North's sixth straight win in the series, East produced significant positive highlights to build upon. A centerpiece of the Olympian attack was sophomore running back Owen Hatfield, who continued his break-out performance as the starting tailback following a season-ending injury to Keatin Roberts. Hatfield spearheaded the rushing game with 24 carries for 103 yards, marking his second straight week surpassing the 100-yard milestone. Additional ground support came from quarterback Kam Combest (11 yards), alongside Paxton Thompson (6 yards) and Daelyn Diaz (6 yards). Through the air, receiver Connor Fudge gave East a dynamic target with 4 catches for 69 yards, while Jackson Miller contributed 4 receptions for 32 yards in addition to converting two extra-point kicks. East established early momentum when defender Will Cochran recovered a fumble at the opponent's 23-yard line on the second play from scrimmage. Four plays later, Combest scrambled 11 yards into the end zone for an early 7-0 lead. The defining sequence of the night occurred late in the second quarter. After East’s defense delivered a clutch goal-line stand by stopping Columbus North on downs at the 7-yard line, the offense executed a seamless 11-play, 93-yard drive. Combest capped the possession with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Fudge with just 16 seconds remaining in the half. During that dominant opening half, East outgained Columbus North 148 to 88 in total yardage, as Combest completed 10 of 14 pass attempts for 102 yards. However, second-half turnovers and missed opportunities ultimately shifted the balance. The Olympians committed six giveaways for the second consecutive week, including fumbles and three second-half interceptions that prevented the offense from establishing a rhythm. After a sharp start, Combest went 0-for-11 in the second half to finish 10-of-25 for 102 yards, while Columbus North outgained East 193 to 70 in the final two quarters. Even during the tough second-half stretch, defender Keegan Fields provided a defensive highlight by snatching an interception to briefly regain possession. If Columbus East can solve its ball-security challenges, the execution demonstrated during their 93-yard scoring drive and physical first-half play proves the squad possesses the foundation needed for success moving forward.
