MOORESVILLE, IN - The Columbus East Olympian football team opened its season on the road at Mooresville High School in a contested matchup, but six total turnovers and red zone misfires proved decisive as Mooresville broke the game open in the fourth quarter to secure a 34-21 victory. Despite the setback, the Olympians showcased impressive ground efficiency and explosive individual performances. Sophomore running back Owen Hatfield delivered a standout varsity debut, churning out 101 rushing yards on 17 carries and finding the end zone. Dallas Dykstra added strong support in the backfield, averaging over 10 yards per touch with 93 yards on nine attempts. Through the air, wideout Carson Gallion provided the spark, catching three passes for 97 yards, headlined by a 50-yard touchdown strike. Individual Offensive Leaders Owen Hatfield: 17 carries, 101 yards, 1 rushing TD Dallas Dykstra: 9 carries, 93 yards Carson Gallion: 3 receptions, 97 yards, 1 receiving TD Connor Fudge: 2 carries, 14 yards, 1 rushing TD; 3 receptions, 26 yards Kam Combest: 7-for-16 passing, 130 yards, 1 TD, 3 INTs East initially answered an early opponent score when a fourth-and-5 running-into-the-kicker penalty sustained their opening drive. Owen Hatfield capitalized on the extra chance, taking a direct snap 11 yards for the game-tying touchdown. After falling behind 17-7, Connor Fudge capped an East drive with a 12-yard touchdown run to pull the team back within three points. The Olympians then capitalized on momentum when defensive back Isaac Fields recorded his first interception of the night. Three plays later, quarterback Kam Combest connected with Carson Gallion on a 50-yard pass to give Columbus East its first lead of the night. Defensively, Daelyn Diaz made a crucial goal-line play by recovering a fumble in the end zone to stop a potential score. However, turnover issues plagued East down the stretch. Trailing 24-21 late in the third quarter, the Olympians earned a first-and-goal at the 4-yard line but were turned away empty-handed after two run attempts netted zero yards followed by two incomplete passes. Fields came up with his second interception on the next play to give East the ball back, but another turnover halted the opportunity, allowing Mooresville to push ahead in the fourth quarter to close out the 34-21 final. The Olympians also faced roster adversity during the contest when starting junior running back Keatin Roberts suffered a severe lower leg injury on a 25-yard kickoff return and was transported to the hospital. Columbus East Defensive Highlights Isaac Fields: 2 interceptions Daelyn Diaz: 1 end-zone fumble recovery Jackson Miller: 3 extra-point kicks converted Looking ahead, the Olympians will head straight to the film room to review the tape and address the turnover and red zone execution issues that stalled their opener. There is no time to dwell, however, as attention immediately shifts to the biggest matchup on the local calendar: cross-town rivalry week. Columbus East travels across town this coming Friday night to go head-to-head with the Columbus North Bulldogs. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Let's Go Orange Nation!
