Columbus East girls track and field battles elite field, recording significant time improvements across relay and individual hurdle events. BLOOMINGTON, IN — The Columbus East Girls Track and Field team faced off against the region’s premier athletic talent on Tuesday night at the IHSAA Regional meet, hosted by Bloomington South High School. Competing in a loaded field where every second and inch proved vital, the Olympians demonstrated impressive resilience, delivering multiple season-best times and peaking at the most critical juncture of the postseason calendar. Leading the individual track charges for the Olympians was standout junior hurdler Kai Scott. Scott, who secured her automatic regional berth last week with a third-place finish at the sectional, put forth a magnificent effort in the 300-meter hurdles. Racing in the first heat of the finals, Scott crossed the finish line in a blistering 47.84 seconds to claim 8th place overall. Her performance was a monumental improvement from her sectional time of 49.38 seconds, shaving nearly a second and a half off her previous mark and showcasing her elite conditioning under championship pressure. Relay Squads Rise to the Occasion Columbus East’s relay teams also turned in sensational performances, matching the high intensity of the Bloomington South track. The 4x100-meter relay team led the relay placements by capturing a strong 6th-place finish in the regional finals. Flying around the track in Heat 2, the squad clocked an impressive 51.25 seconds—improving upon their sectional runner-up time of 51.99 seconds. The improvements didn't stop there. In the 4x400-meter relay, the Olympian quartet dropped a massive chunk of time, crossing the line in 4:22.48 to place 11th overall. This stellar performance cut nearly five full seconds off their automatic qualifying sectional time of 4:27.19. Earlier in the evening, the grueling 4x800-meter relay team set the tone for the running events, battling through a highly competitive field to finish 16th with a time of 11:31.28. Field Events Solidified by Gallion In the field, senior leader Sophia Gallion capped off an excellent postseason run in the shot put circles. Having captured the Hoosier Hills Conference title earlier this month and earning a callback from the sectional meet, Gallion launched a throw of 32 feet, 9 inches. Her mark placed her 12th overall in a regional field that featured some of the top-ranked throwers across the state of Indiana. While the Olympians did not secure an automatic top-3 finish to guarantee immediate state berths, their massive time improvements put them in contention for potential state callback additions as the remaining regional sheets across the state are fully compiled. Regardless of the final callback numbers, the Columbus East Girls Track and Field program can look back at the Bloomington South Regional as a definitive success, characterized by athletes peaking exactly when it mattered most. Good job Olympians!
