After two rainouts earlier in the week, the third time proved to be the charm for the Columbus East softball team Thursday night at Olympian Field. Originally scheduled for May 18 before being postponed to May 20 and then delayed again by weather, the Hoosier Hills Conference matchup with Jeffersonville was finally played — and the Olympians made the most of their long-awaited opportunity. Columbus East came out with plenty of energy and broke the game wide open with an explosive 11-run third inning on the way to a dominant 15-2 victory over the Red Devils in five innings. The Olympians collected 12 hits in the contest and were aggressive from the opening pitch, putting constant pressure on Jeffersonville both offensively and on the basepaths. Leadoff hitter Lola Watkins sparked the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Watkins scored twice, drove in a run, and added a stolen base to continue her strong season at the top of the lineup. Baleigh Fish delivered one of the biggest swings of the night, blasting a home run and finishing 1-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Natasha Armstrong also had a huge night offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs while scoring twice. Jacque Boroughs helped herself at the plate with a terrific 3-for-4 performance and two RBIs, while Ariel Darnell stayed hot offensively, finishing 2-for-2 with an RBI, two runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base. Thaise Jessup added a hit and RBI for the Olympians, while Mackenzie Hampton drove in a run and reached base with a walk. Ladaishia Logan contributed two RBIs and executed a sacrifice bunt during the big offensive outburst. East also showed patience at the plate, drawing five walks in the game, while several Olympians created extra havoc on the bases. Taylor Wessel scored twice and stole two bases, while courtesy runner Emma Armstrong crossed the plate twice and added a steal of her own. In the circle, Boroughs was dominant for Columbus East. The sophomore pitcher worked four strong innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out eight Red Devil hitters. Jayley Smiley closed out the final inning in relief. Thursday night also served as an opportunity to recognize the leadership and dedication of the Olympians’ senior class. Mackenzie Hampton, Ladaishia Logan, and Natasha Armstrong have each played an important role in the Columbus East softball program and have helped lay a strong foundation through their leadership, work ethic, and commitment to the team. With the victory, the Olympians closed out their regular season schedule in impressive fashion and carried plenty of momentum into the postseason. Speaking of the post season, the Olympians now turn their focus to the IHSAA State Softball tournament. Sectional #14 this year will be hosted by Whiteland High School. The Olympians open Sectional play against the East Central Trojans on Tuesday, May 26th starting at 6 p.m. The Trojans enter Sectional play with a 17-10 record (as of 5/22) and a team the Olympian did not face in the regular season. It should be a great battle, GO O's!
