The Columbus East varsity softball team traveled to North Vernon on Tuesday evening for a conference matchup against Jennings County. It was a close game that went into extra innings, with the Olympians eventually falling 7-6 in eight innings. East was in a good position late in the contest, holding a 5-3 lead as they headed into the bottom of the seventh. Jennings County managed to score two runs in that frame to tie the game and force an extra inning. The Olympians regained the lead with a run in the top of the eighth, but the Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom half to take the win. The Olympian offense finished the night with eight hits. Natasha Armstrong had a productive game at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and two RBIs. Ariel Darnell also went 2-for-4 with a double, scoring two runs and adding a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt to her stat line. Several other Olympians contributed to the effort: Taylor Wessel went 1-for-4 and scored a run. Baleigh Fish picked up a hit while handling the pitching duties, going 6.2 innings and allowing only three earned runs on nine hits. Lola Watkins finished 1-for-4 with a stolen base. Thaise Jessup recorded a hit and a walk. L. Logan drove in a run and had a sacrifice bunt. Jacque Boroughs showed patience at the plate with two walks. Emma Armstrong served as a courtesy runner, scoring one run and stealing a base. While the team played a solid game, three defensive errors helped Jennings County keep things close. The Olympians are back in action, Friday, May 1st, when the host another Hoosier Hills Conference match up against the Bedford North-Lawrence Stars at Olympian Field. First pitch: 6 p.m.
