Facing the top-ranked team in the state, the Columbus East boys volleyball squad knew it would take something special to go toe-to-toe with the unbeaten Perry Meridian Falcons. Despite the final scores of 10-25, 13-25, and 9-25, the Olympians delivered a performance that went far beyond the scoreboard. Taking on a Perry Meridian team that entered the match at 6-0 and sitting atop the MaxPreps Indiana rankings, Columbus East embraced the challenge from the opening serve. The Olympians competed with energy and a level of cohesion that impressed head coach Kailey Davidson. “There are no words to explain how proud I am of this group tonight,” Davidson said. “Competing against the number one team in the state, the boys showed incredible effort, heart, and teamwork. The scores don’t truly reflect how well they played or how hard they battled throughout the game.” Columbus East found contributions across the lineup. Jax Branaman and Kash Coers each recorded an ace, while Kamron Robertson led the attack with two kills. David Sylva, Trevor Ernst, and Matthew Muir added a kill apiece as the Olympians looked to find rhythm offensively against a tough Falcons defense. Defensively, Ernst paced the back row with three digs, while Branaman added two. Cooers and Josiah Shelton each chipped in a dig as East worked to extend rallies and stay competitive throughout the match. At the net, Patrick Strickland, Matthew Muir, and Shelton each contributed a block, showing the Olympians’ willingness to challenge Perry Meridian’s attack. Coers helped facilitate the offense with four assists, keeping the ball moving and giving his teammates opportunities to swing. While the Falcons ultimately secured the straight-set victory, Davidson emphasized that the experience gained against elite competition will pay dividends moving forward. “Their resilience and the way they supported each other really stood out,” she said. “This group is special, and I cannot wait to see where this season leads us.” Columbus East may not have come away with the win, but the Olympians proved they’re not backing down from anyone—and that mindset could carry this team through the up and downs as the season unfolds. The Olympians are back on the road again, when they face Herron High School for 6 p.m. start time on Tueaday, April 7th. Good luck O's!
