Columbus East Track & Field Delivers Strong Performances at Red Devils Last Chance Qualifier

INDIANAPOLIS – The Columbus East boys and girls track and field teams traveled to the Athletics Recreation Center (ARC) at the University of Indianapolis on March 21st to compete in the Red Devils Last Chance HSR Qualifier. Facing a competitive field in one of the final indoor opportunities of the season, the Olympians showcased several standout individual and relay performances. Dickson Leads the Way for the Boys Sophomore Norman Dickson provided the highlight of the day for the boys' squad. Competing in the 3200-meter run, Dickson clocked an impressive 10:02.82, earning a 4th-place finish overall. His distance prowess was also on display in the Distance Medley Relay (DMR), where he anchored a team consisting of Lorren Westerfeld, Deonte Study, and Elijah Clore to an 11th-place finish with a time of 12:31.52. In the sprints, senior Deonte Study represented the Olympians well in the 60-meter dash. Study posted a solid time of 7.44 seconds in the preliminaries, placing 12th in a crowded field of sprinters. Scott and Gallion Shine for the Girls On the girls' side, senior Kai Scott led the charge over the hurdles. Scott successfully navigated the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 10.45 seconds to qualify for the finals. In the championship heat, she battled to a 7th-place finish, crossing the line in 10.48 seconds. In the field events, junior Sophia Gallion notched a top-15 performance in the shot put. Gallion’s best toss of the day measured 31' 11", securing her 12th place. Teammate Ava Behnke also competed in the event, finishing with a mark of 15' 11". The girls' relay efforts were highlighted by the 4x200-meter relay team. The quartet of Kai Scott, Selby Brown, Camilla DeVreese, and Claire Behnke posted a time of 2:05.87, finishing 11th. In individual sprints, Claire Behnke took 14th in the 60-meter dash prelims (8.51), while Selby Brown finished in 9.59. Freshman Emma Tempest rounded out the hurdles group with a 21st-place finish in the 60m hurdles prelims (12.63). Looking Ahead: The Last Chance Qualifier serves as a pivotal bridge for athletes looking to finalize their indoor marks before the transition to the outdoor season. With several top-ten finishes and competitive relay times, the Columbus East program appears well-positioned as they head into the heart of the spring schedule.
