IU Natatorium, Indianapolis — Columbus East sophomore Josh Pendleton didn’t just show up at the IHSAA Boys Swimming & Diving State Finals — he made a statement. Competing at the Indiana University Natatorium during the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Championship, Pendleton delivered two podium-caliber swims, rewriting his own school records and finishing among the state’s elite in both distance freestyle events. Pendleton placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking a 4:32.58 in Saturday’s finals after qualifying seventh in prelims. The performance moved him up a spot in one of the fastest heats of the night and secured his highest state finish to date. He wasn’t finished. In the 200-yard freestyle, Pendleton returned to the pool determined to climb the standings. After qualifying 11th on Friday, he responded with a dominant swim in the consolation final, touching the wall in 1:41.79 to win the heat and finish ninth overall — another Top-10 effort against the best competition Indiana has to offer. Both swims surpassed the school records he had already set, marking a weekend defined by growth, confidence, and composure on the biggest stage. For Pendleton, the experience built on last year’s state appearance in the 500 freestyle as a freshman. That familiarity showed. The moment wasn’t too big — it fueled him. Two races. Two school records. Two Top-10 finishes. That’s not participation. That’s arrival. And with two more years still ahead, the ceiling for Columbus East swimming just rose considerably.
