Columbus East High School served as host for the Hoosier Hills Conference Girls Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday evening/Saturday afternoon, welcoming teams from across the conference for a competitive conference tournament. While the Olympians were not part of the team scoring with just one athlete entered, the event still brought high-level racing to East’s home pool. Seymour led the way in the team standings, successfully defending its conference championship with 391 points. Floyd Central followed in second, with Jeffersonville, Bedford North Lawrence, New Albany, and Jennings County rounding out the field. Columbus East was represented by Baylee Benefield, who competed in two freestyle events. Benefield placed 14th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:08.84 and finished 15th in the 200 freestyle in 2:32.36. Competing solo is never easy, but Benefield stepped up and represented the Olympians with pride on her home deck. Hosting the HHC Championships was an opportunity for Columbus East to showcase its facilities and support conference swimming, continuing the school’s tradition of being a strong host for conference and tournament events.
