Columbus East High School Names Tyler Campbell Head Football Coach COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus East High School has named Tyler Campbell as the fourth head football coach in program history, marking the beginning of a new chapter for one of Indiana’s most tradition-rich football programs. Campbell takes over an Olympian program that has captured three IHSAA state championships (1979, 2013, 2017) and has been guided by only three head coaches since the school opened in 1972. He succeeds Eddie Vogel (2021–2025), Bob Gaddis (2001-2020), and John Stafford (1975-2000). The search for the next head football coach focused on identifying the right fit for Columbus East — a leader who reflects the program’s values while bringing a forward-thinking approach. “The search for our next head football coach centered on finding the right fit — someone who embodies the values and culture of Columbus East, ” said David Miller, Athletic Director at Columbus East High School. “We have found a leader who will continue to build a program grounded in hard work, discipline, accountability, and toughness, while also bringing a strong understanding of X’s and O’s. ” Campbell brings experience at nearly every level of football, including youth, high school, collegiate, and professional ranks. His background includes work at Jackson State University and Illinois Wesleyan University, head coaching stops at Covington High School and Maconaquah High School, and professional experience with the Dallas Renegades of the XFL, where he worked under Hal Mumme and Bob Stoops. “From the beginning of the process, Tyler Campbell clearly stood out, ” Miller said. “He has head coaching experience at the high school level and has served as an offensive coordinator at Ben Davis, one of the premier programs in the state. He has a proven track record of developing players, supporting coaches through professional development, and emphasizing strength and conditioning to help athletes become bigger, faster, and stronger. I am excited to see Tyler implement his vision for East Football and build a strong football program. ” Most recently, Campbell served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ben Davis High School, where he coached the 2024 Mr. Football winner and developed a record-setting quarterback. A 2015 graduate of Attica High School, Campbell played small-school football and credits that experience with shaping his coaching philosophy. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Studies Education from Purdue University and currently teaches English. He and his wife, Kenzie, currently reside in Indianapolis, but will be moving to Columbus in the next few months. Campbell emphasized the importance of honoring Columbus East’s tradition while continuing to move the program forward. “The standards that have been established here — toughness, discipline, and doing things the right way — will never change,” Campbell said. “Our responsibility is to honor that legacy while continuing to evolve, developing great football players and great young men, and positioning Columbus East to compete for championships.” Campbell will begin his tenure pending board approval after Winter Break as an English teacher at Columbus East, filling a teacher retirement. Campbell will begin assembling his coaching staff and prepare the Olympians for the upcoming season. Welcome to Columbus East, Coach Campbell! David Miller Athletic Director Columbus East High School
