COLUMBUS EAST — The Columbus East boys freshman basketball team came up just short Monday night, dropping a tightly contested 32–29 decision to New Palestine in the Orange Pit. The Olympians struggled to find an offensive rhythm early and trailed 12–6 at the end of the first quarter. Despite the slow start, East’s defensive effort kept the game within reach, as the Dragons held a narrow 18–13 advantage at halftime. Parker Jones and Eric Kiel carried the scoring load in the opening half, combining for eight of East’s 13 points. East responded after the break with improved energy and execution, repeatedly cutting the deficit to a single point during the second half. Each time the Olympians threatened to take the lead, New Palestine answered, and East was ultimately unable to get over the hump in the closing minutes. Jones led the Olympians with nine points and two assists, while Kiel turned in a strong all-around performance with eight points, five rebounds, and three steals. East also received scoring contributions from Gavin Wilcox (4 points), Owen Hatfield (3), Luke Lienhoop (3), and Frank Phillips (2). Despite the result, the effort showed growth and balance, with multiple players contributing on both ends of the floor. The East freshmen will look to bounce back Friday, December 19, when they host crosstown rival Columbus North at 6 p.m. in the Orange Pit.
